In October 2007 the town of Javea on Spain’s Costa Blanca was hit by a tremendous storm causing huge damage to many parts of the town but in particular to the Arenal beach which was devastated.
These severe storms are known in Spain as Gota Fria’s. In just a few hours a huge amount of rain falls causing severe floods.
In this instance the huge amounts of water running off the land meant the canal in Javea was hit hard by water surge. Many of the boats moored in the canal were either overturned or swept out to sea only to be crushed by the breaking waves.
