Moving to La Mata
If you are thinking of moving to La Mata, then you must read our expat interview with Rainer Schmitz of Alegria La Mata below:
Rainer, what would you say would be the advantages to living in La Mata compared to other Costa Blanca towns?
La Mata is a traditional Spanish Coastal resort on the Orihuela Costa that is officially known as Torre La Mata. It is a lovely place for a holiday home or permanent living as it still has its own original Spanish identity. It is not commercialized like many of the other popular Costa Blanca resorts and remains a peaceful and tranquil area with a very relaxed atmosphere.
What proportion of the local population are Spanish?
La Mata is becoming a more popular destination because of what it has to offer its visitors and residents alike, including its lovely Blue Flag Beaches. Although the Costa Blanca is famous for international tourism and is highly commercialized to cater for all nationalities, La Mata is ever so popular with the Spanish locals who come from the hustle and bustle of the big populated cities such as Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia, where they come to holiday and relax in this pretty unspoiled coastal resort. Many of the residents are Spanish and it is now attracting a wider international clientele although not the persona who is looking for a “home from home in the sun”.
Are there smaller villages nearby that you might also recommend?
The Village itself has a back drop to the salt lake and the Parque Natural de La Mata y Torrevieja. It also produces its own variety of wine which is being sold as far afield as the United States. You can also purchase a bottle of wine locally from one of the local Bodegas for a few euros. In the town area there is a local Square that hosts “traditional Spanish fiestas” throughout the year and the local facilities include a good variety of shops, supermarkets together with pavement cafes, bars, traditional and international eateries .
What are your favourite things to do in the area?
The beach walkway is excellent for a stroll with its magnificent views over to the Mediterranean and you can stop off and enjoy a glass of wine or a beer to relax in the lovely all year round weather that La Mata enjoys, making it a truly all year round resort, it is easily reached within 35 minutes from the Airports of Alicante and San Javier Murcia. It is adjacent to the National N-332 road and is just a couple of kilometers from the city of Torrevieja.
