Specifically, we asked Guy on the advantages of choosing Jimena de la Frontera as a place to live and the value for money that you can get if you decide to stay permanently in the area.
Guy, thanks for helping our readers. I guess we should start off by asking what would you say would be the advantages to living in Jimena de la Frontera compared to other Costa del Sol towns?
The advantage of living in Jimena compared to other towns is a quieter living, more relaxed pace of life and living in a Spanish town that still retains much of its original ambience, and with a very easy commute 35-40 minutes to both the Atlantic and Mediterranean coast.
Would the area not suit certain types of people, i.e. are there any possible downsides?
People looking for discos and sports bars would probably not find Jimena is good for them. Most people that come to Jimena either work in Gibraltar or the international school in Sotogrande, or have their own business, and of course the retirees. There are also a large number of properties owned by expats (of all nationalities) that simply use them as holiday homes, and in some cases also rent them out as holiday lets.
Jimena seems to attract a lot of artists and we have a large community of international musicians.
What proportion of the local population are Spanish?
The population of Jimena is around 6,000 of which around 5 percent are foreign.
What are your favourite things to do in the area?
A lot of my clients come to the area to take advantage of the Natural Park, second biggest in Europe, for walks, hiking, riding and mountain biking. Also the abundance of fauna and flora.
Can you give us some insider tips to the best bars or restaurants?
We have a selection of bars and restaurants ranging from basic but great tapa bars to restaurants offering local produce and international fare, and a selection of hostels and hotels too.
Are there many facilities such as doctors and dentists, shops etc?
There is a large health center, various dentists and opticians, supermarkets and local shops serving the community.
Are there smaller villages nearby that you might also recommend?
There are other villages closed by mainly San Pablo de Buceite that offers an even quieter life style.
What are the nearest international schools and how good are they?
The international School at Sotogrande has a really good reputation and caters for all ages and nationalities. The local school also has a mixture of expats.
Is crime an issue for expats?
Crime in the area isn’t an issue and theft is very rare.
How much are the typical property prices in Jimena de la Frontera for apartments, villas etc?
Properties range from a basic town house in need of some tlc for around 60.000 euros; flats and apartments at a similar price, good three bedrooms town houses 200 to 300.000. Country properties from 250 and up.
Any tips and advice to people looking to buy in Jimena de la Frontera or surrounding area?
There is something to suit every budget. Prices have been low in the last months and I expect a light increase in the next year. After Brexit I expected things to slow but in fact I have seen an increase in sales and a lot of interest, from foreigners and Spanish alike.
