Sights, Attractions and Things to Do
The fortress-like cathedral which is notable for the Gothic cloister and 12th century crypt. Roman ruins were found underneath the main aisle in 1983. Inside the cathedral is the tomb of writer and historian Marcelino Menendez y Pelayo, who was born in the city in 1856.
The prehistoric and archeology museum (Museo de Prehistoria y Archaeologia) traces the history of the area with some fascinating local artifact such as finds from the prehistoric caves at Altamira and pieces from local Roman hill forts.
For art lovers the Museo de Bellas Artes is worth a visit as it displays paintings by Francisco de Goya, including a series of etchings entitled ‘Disasters of War’ and a portrait of Fernando VII.
The main beach of Playa del Sardinero is situated in the area of El Sardinero and it has a wonderful promenade lined with hotels, restaurants, cafes and 19th century mansions. Alternatively go to the beach at El Puntal with its lovely sand dunes.
To the north is the Magdalenas peninsular where you can see the palace (Palacio de la Magdelena) built in 1911 as a summer home for King Alfonso XIII.
There is also a small zoo in this srea where the kids will enjoy watching animals such as seals, polar bears and penguins. The small Blue Flag beach of El Camello is located nearby.
Matalenas Park is home of the lighthouse and the local golf course.
