The reality is buying a bar for sale in Spain is fraught with difficulties and challenges and the dream of finding a bar Spain can easily become a nightmare.

If you are not ready for the hard work that is involved in running a bar then we suggest you consider our guide to jobs in Spain.
Spain can be a great place to open a bar – as a major tourist destination there are millions of tourists in Spain needing food and drink in a very hot country.
Of course this is no secret and there are already thousands of bars in Spain competing with your bar.
When looking to buy a bar in Spain consider if you want to buy on the coast – a good option as the coasts are teeming with tourists or if you want to buy a bar for sale more inland in which case you will have to attract the Spanish too.
Regulations & Licenses
When looking to find a bar for sale in Spain we recommend going through a licensed agent. When buying a bar in Spain you will find that Spanish laws are very different to laws elsewhere. Many bars for sale in Spain do not have a license which is why they may appear to be a bargain.
Ultimately the Spanish police will close the bar down. Also you need a music license to have live music – again find out if the bar you want to bar has this.
There is a lot of regulation in Spain and you need to be aware of these. For example there could be restrictions on the sale of tobacco or food or regulations on bar opening hours.
If you are buying a bar direct with the owner you may find there are debts on the bar that are unpaid – buying a bar through a licensed agent will ensure that you are not ripped off, or at least reduce the risk of this.
How Much Does It Cost To Buy a Bar?
The price to buy a bar in Spain depends on the amount of business. Be careful as to the accounts as they may be inflated.
Spend time in the bar you intend to buy to ensure that the bars business is as much as the owner claims. Ask why the owner of the bar wants to sell. Have you even worked in a bar before and gaining that invaluable experience?
Don’t buy a bar in Spain that is losing money thinking you will turn it around. As we said – it is not hard to find a bar for sale in Spain – so make sure you at least take over a Spanish bar that is profitable.
Clearly owning a bar or pub means opening early and closing very, very late.
You will not be able to have holidays and you will be tied to the bar and have little time off. Many people find this aspect of running a bar in Spain very difficult after awhile.
When making your decision consider the amount of locals.
Some Spanish towns are dead after the summer season ends so try buy in a town which is alive the whole year.
Have you run a bar before?
Most people looking for a bar for sale in Spain have never run one before. This doesn’t mean that buying a bar in Spain is a bad idea – we can all learn – but it means starting small is a good idea.
Try buy a bar that is not too big to cope with. The bigger the bar, the bigger the bills and you will have to employ more bar staff with all the headaches that entails.
Good luck with finding a bar in Spain and making the move to Spain.
For Sale – Bar in Barcelona
LAS CUEVAS DEL SORTE
Walking into this very unique and elegant cocktail bar is like stepping into a tropical cave. This emblematic establishment has a privileged location in the center of the Gothic neighbourhood in Barcelona, just off one of the main shopping streets (c/ Aviñon) with enjoys tourism all year round.
It is a 3 minute walk from The Ramblas, very close to the Plaza Real, and a 10 min. walk from the beach. It is also close to 3 metro stations, bus and taxi stops.
What had formerly been a famous Tablao Flamenco spot for many years (hence the cave-like interior still conserved on the ground floor), it was transformed by hand, over a 14 month period by it’s present owners into a beautiful, mosaic-clad cocktail bar.
Currently the bar serves, along with it’s well-knows list of cocktails, a ‘tapas’-style menu, though preparation is restricted to non-frying activities as there is no extraction system as of yet.
Never the less, food can be heated with a microwave or any other non-smoke producing apparatus if needed. With more than 100m2 of space for the public, the establishment is complete with a ground floor, which boasts of stone floors, as well as an antique, oak bar adorned with stalactites and heavy, wooden stools.
The downstairs, which is a bit more cozy and perfect for couples, is also very accommodating to large groups.
Each floor has it’s own large, fully-functioning bar equipped with sinks, refrigerators, liquor racks, etc. The place also comes complete with refrigerators, freezers, air conditioning, sound system, microwaves and custom, mosaic tables.
Taking advantage of it’s large basement the establishment regularly hosts events such as stand-up comedy and live music nights, as well as DJ, stag, birthday and wedding parties, amongst others.
In the 8 years that the current owners have been in business the place has earned a distinguished and regular client base of locals, tourists who tend to come back every time they’re in town, and many ex-pats who live in the city.
The married couple who are the present owners are selling as they have decided to move back to the wife’s native Venezuela. As such, it is available immediately.
The photos of the place really don’t do it justice and we urge interested parties to see it for themselves.
