Los Belones Costa Calida: Essential Tourist Guide From Locals

Enjoy our quick guide to Los Belones, a small village situated 5 km south of the famous Mar Menor in Spain’s Murcia region.

Despite its size, Los Belones is a busy and modern village that boasts a wide selection of shops, bars and outdoor fun such as golf courses and beaches.

Why Retirement is a Terrible Idea (What to Do Instead)...

For 30 years, I built businesses with one goal in mind: the finish line. Like many, I pictured the classic dream—moving to Spain, soaking up the sun, and finally switching off. But now that I’m here, I’ve started questioning everything.

Watch the video below and let me know in the comments: are you ready to retire or reinvent instead?

Los Belones is only 20 minutes to the historical Cartagena City and to the Murcia airport at San Javier. Other airport nearby is the Corvera airport which opened to the public in 2010.

Below we feature an expat interview with Gordon Turnbull of Blue Med Spanish Properties who covers the Los Belones area.

Specifically, we wanted to learn from Gordon the many reasons why people should consider moving to this area and the value for money they can get once they decide to stay permanently.

Gordon, thanks for helping our readers. I guess we should start off by asking what would you say would be the advantages to living in Los Belones compared to other Costa Calida towns?

It is a 24/7, 365 days a year town with all the necessary amenities on hand. We have the world famous La Manga Club with its 3-Championship golf courses on our doorstep. Also San Javier airport, which is very small and much more comfortable than Alicante, is 20 minutes drive.

Would the area not suit certain types of people, i.e. are there any possible downsides?

No communal pools with any of the properties in the village. That said, we are 5 minutes drive from the Mar Menor and its wonderful beaches and there is a bus service from the village direct to Calblanque. This is one of the most beautiful, unspoilt beaches that Spain has to offer. (It was voted into the top ten natural beauty spots in Spain a few years ago.)

What proportion of the local population are Spanish?

Around 90 percent. The rest just about all British.

What are your favourite things to do in the area?

Famous for its seafood restaurants, its sailing/watersports, its nature reserves, beaches. The biggest asset though is the Mar Menor, warm, safe and the biggest natural lagoon in Europe.

Can you give us some insider tips to the best bars or restaurants?

In the village Villa Romano – Italian, Pablo Guardiola and Garnacha – Spanish.

Are there many facilities such as doctors and dentists
