We list and recommend English-speaking companies that offer the installation of solar panels in Spain.
Solar energy works by capturing the sun’s energy and turning it into electricity for your home or business.
A government decree has now eliminated many bureaucratic hurdles.
Installation prices have dropped hugely so perhaps it is now time to invest in a system that will massively cut or even entirely eliminate your electricity bills.
Most companies listed are based on the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca, Madrid, Mallorca and Tenerife.
The Complete Guide to Solar Energy Systems in Spain
How Do Solar Panels Work?
Solar panels are made from small solar cells and assembled in a larger panel format. The cells absorb the sunlight and turn it into DC (direct current) electricity. The DC electricity is then converted into AC (alternative current) electricity, by a device called inverter, and is fed to your internal power grid.
How Long Do Solar Panels Last?
Most manufacturers give 10-year warranty against defect in Manufacture with up to 25 years of output efficiency to 95%, however, installed and maintained properly, you can expect them to last and produce a good amount of electricity in excess of 25 years.
What Should Be the Size of My Solar System?
The size of the system you need depends on several factors: how much electricity you use, how much money are you willing to invest and what is the size of your roof or area for installation. You should also consider if you want solar energy to meet all your electrical energy needs or just a portion of them.
Do Solar Panels in Spain Need a Lot of Maintenance?
Typically solar panels require very little maintenance and are usually self-cleaning. Modern PV panels work well even if somewhat dusty, it is prudent to clean off excess dust or even wash off panels with a hose if necessary. Ideally, you should check with your installer about maintenance requirements.
Should Panels be Roof-Mounted or Ground-Mounted?
Roof-mounted solar panels are generally less expensive because they do not require support structures. You also make use of otherwise unutilized space on your roof. Ground-mounted panels are a good option if your roof is not suitable for solar panels. Plus, solar panels installed on the ground can be tilted and adjusted to the sun which may increase efficiency.
What Is the Cost of Solar Panels in Spain?
There are two major types of Solar system, Off-Grid ( IE a property that has no connector or cannot get a connection to the Utility electrical supply) or On-Grid which is a solar system that is connected directly to your property power supply and prioritizes solar electricity over the grid supply when active,
Additionally, On-Grid system can have batteries fitted to store surplus Solar Charge for later use ( IE evenings and night)
The price will vary depending on the size, brand and type of solar panels, and whether the need is on-grid or off-grid,
On average, a Grid-connected household needs a 3kW solar system producing about 12KWH of electricity per day will cost around 4500/5,500EU.
A system of 5kW, Producing about 20KWh of electricity per day, could cost around £6500/7,000EU.
How Much Can I Save on my Electricity Bills with Solar Energy?
There are lots of factors involved in the actual cost savings, depending on Tariff, Installation and user consumption, and most importantly level of sunshine, fortunately in Spain, we have an average of 320 sunny days per year,
For example, a 3KW array will typically produce around 12KWh per day, however, this power is only available when the sun shines, so it is important that you use this power or you effectively lose it, ,
Example, you have a Pool filter system that typically runs for 6 hours per day and for each hour it will consume approx. 1,2KWH of Electrical energy, if you run this during the peak sun hours the 3KW array will effectively run your pool pump for free, (a saving of some 7KWH per day), further any surplus power will be used by other appliances such as the Water heater, WiFi router, TV, Fridge etc which could further reduce electrical costs,
Depending on individual factors the payback of a solar system in Spain is typically from 7 to 12 years
Recent changes in legislation (RD25/2019) has made the installation of Solar energy much simpler with easy registration on the Solar Register
The introduction of the “Nett Balance Metering”, wherein it is proposed that surplus energy produced by the home solar system is fed back to the grid via the meter , this energy is registered as a credit , and then you can call on this credit in the evening for example until such time as the credit balance is consumed.
It should be noted that his has not been fully accepted by the utility companies as yet, but is expected to be fully rolled out this year.
Which Are the Most Efficient Spanish Solar Panels?
There are three types of solar panels and they differ in efficiency and price. Monocrystalline solar panels are the most efficient. Some models can convert up to 22 per cent of the sunlight they receive into electricity.
Polycrystalline solar panels are second in efficiency and some models can reach up to 19 per cent. Thin-film solar panels have the lowest efficiency (around 10 per cent) but are also the least expensive panels.
Monocrystalline solar panels are more expensive and for the relatively small increase in benefit the lower cost polycrystalline we suffice,
Most modules fitted in Spain tend to be Polycrystalline.
PV modules are constantly improving and higher efficiencies are regularly seen,
What Are the Benefits of Solar Panels?
- Obviously the reduction of the use of Fossil Fuels.
- Reduction of Personal Carbon footprint.
- Lower power costs.
- Increasing return on investment as Utility power cost increase.
- Battery supported systems offer immunity to power cuts
- Increase power stability.
- And a very important feature in Spain, can increase your contracted Potencia minimizing nuisance meter trips etc.
- THE JONES FACTOR.
Careful choice of a solar system to meet and match your power needs can have great benefit, particularly in Spain, wherewith the high number of days of good sunshine can provide a rapid return of investment. Careful system selection coupled with the Electrical Tariff selection can result in some significant savings.
On-grid systems are particularly cost-effective where there is a daily constant load such as Pool Pump, Pool heater, Hot water Heater, Air conditioning/refrigeration and Irrigation pumps.

I already have solar panels (although I am considering further installation). You explain on this page about Net Balance Metering where surplus electricity not stored can be sent to the grid. Payment received is generally supposed to be around 0.05 cents per KWH. I was (at first) very pleased to discover that I was receiving this payment (marked Autoconsumo credit on my electricity bill) but then directly underneath it states ‘Autoconsumo No Compensable’, in other words Not Payable. For example, the credit for June was €27,13 but the debited amount was €23,80. Every month, whatever credits I receive are almost wiped out by this unexplained debit payment. All solar companies advertise that customers can recoup some costs by effectively selling surplus back to the grid but at around €3 a month, what’s the point? And why is the electricity distributor allowed to get away with this? No-one seems to be able to explain this to me. Can you?

As sun irradiation during the year is not stabil, how generation of electricity coming from photovoltaic panel is floating during the year? What is a diffrence in generation during the worst winter month comparing the best summer month?
