Pound hits 3-week high versus euro, as UK economy ignores Brexit

Peter Lavelle

Welcome to Pure FX’s latest update of the pound to euro exchange rate.

Sterling rebounds! The pound to euro interbank exchange rate has touched 1.1762 today, its highest since August 5th, or almost 3 weeks.

Moreover, looking ahead, sterling could continue to rise versus the euro. Here are 5 reasons why:

1. The pound may continue to climb, because UK retail sales rose +1.4% in July, easily exceeding forecasts for a +0.2% rise, in spite of the recent vote to leave the EU.

2. Sterling could rise further, because UK unemployment held steady at +4.9% last month, telling us that the UK job market remains tight, in spite of Brexit.

3. The pound may strengthen, because the UK’s biggest house builder Persimmon has said that people’s interest in buying a home rose in July, in spite of the Brexit uncertainty.

4. Sterling could jump higher, because Brits used their credit cards 168 million times in July, says the BBA, a +6% rise on last year, indicating that Brits aren’t worried about exiting the EU.

5. The pound could get a boost, because credit rating agency Moody’s said recently that the UK will avoid recession, in spite of Brexit, and in fact grow +1.5% in 2016.

Given all this, the pound to euro exchange rate could exceed this 3-week high!
