Did you know?

The Alhambra Castle was originally built for military purposes and has been in existence since the 9th century. The name Alhambra has an Arabic source which is said to mean “red” or “crimson” castle. It became a Christian court in 1492 as a result of the conquest of the city of Granada by the Catholic Monarchs identified as Ferdinand and Isabel. It wasn’t until 1870 when the Alhambra was officially recognized and declared as a national monument. In 1984, the Alhambra became one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Pound hits 9-week high versus euro, as UK GDP accelerates in Q4

Peter Lavelle

Welcome to Pure FX’s latest update of the pound to euro interbank exchange rate.

Sterling strengthens versus the common currency!

The pound to euro interbank exchange rate has flown as high as 1.19 this week, its highest in 9 weeks, or since December 20th.

By contrast, the pound was as low as 1.1365 on January 16th. Hence, it’s since risen by +4.70%, or more than +6 cents.

To put this into context, a £250,000 transfer to Spain would this week be worth +€13,375 more than 6 weeks ago.

(Please bear in mind, these are the interbank rates at the time of writing. This means the exchange rate may have changed since then.)

Pound could strengthen further, as UK GDP rises

What’s more, the pound could soon exceed its 9-week high versus the euro, looking ahead. This is because:

1. Sterling could strengthen, because UK GDP expanded by +0.7% in Q4 2016, faster than before the Brexit vote.

2. The pound may climb, because the Bank of England said this week that UK inflation is moving closer to its “tolerance” to lift interest rates.

3. The euro could weaken, because extreme-right candidate Marine La Pen is gaining in France’s presidential polls.

4. The euro may fall, because Greece has missed a vital deadline to pay back a bailout tranche, taking us closer to Grexit.

With all this in mind, the pound to euro interbank exchange rate could continue to rise!
