5 Golf Courses In Costa del Sol That You Shouldn’t Miss
Costa del Sol (“The Sun Coast”) is a popular region on the southern coast of Spain with cliffs and beaches of unrivaled beauty bordering the Mediterranean Sea. It’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world with pitch-perfect weather year-round. With a climate similar to Southern California, it has numerous golf courses that take advantage of the stunning natural scenery and provide an experience you’ll want to relive again and again. Here are five of the very best golf courses Costa del Sol has to offer:
Marbella Golf & Country Club
This Dave Thomas-designed course opened in 1954 and has been known since then as arguably the finest golf experience Costa del Sol has to offer. A difficult front nine, with wild elevation changes and steeply sloping greens, gives way to a slightly easier back nine that will offer good golfers birdie opportunities. Views of Gibraltar and the African coastline in the distance are distractingly gorgeous. The course emphasizes pace of play, offering limited tee times and requiring handicaps of 28 for men and 36 for ladies. If you stay at the attached (and amazing) Marbella Club Hotel resort, a complimentary greens fee is included.
La Quinta Golf & Country Club
This 27-hole facility located in the Marbella Valley is attached to the Westin La Quinta Golf Resort & Spa, and it’s geared towards golfers of all skill levels. Expert golfers will find plenty of birdie chances on the well-manicured greens, and beginner golfers will appreciate the shorter hole distances than you’ll find at most resort courses. The three nines can be played in any combination to give you plenty of variety during your stay at the incredible Westin Resort.
San Roque Club
This course from Perry Dye (son of legendary designer Pete Dye) is compactly laid over top of an original Robert Trent Jones course and opened in 2003. One of the most visually stirring courses in the area, it borders a peaceful nature reserve to provide a tranquil and serene experience. With views of the ocean and nearby rolling hillsides, it’s a unique course that’s worth going out of your way to play.
Finca Cortesin
This imposing beast of a course sits at the base of mountains that loom imposingly in the distance, giving a sense of size and scope that the course delivers on. At over 7600 yards, it’s a course designed for better golfers, shown by the fact that it’s hosted several World Match Play Championships and other professional tournaments. The incredible par 5 third hole is one of the best in Spain, with clever bunkering, a hole-length water hazard on the left, and beautiful views of the Mediterranean in the distance. Don’t forget to wear your best golf shoes when visiting this course.
Real Club Valderrama
A course that’s sometimes considered the best in mainland Europe, Valderrama has played host to the Andalucia Masters, Volvo Masters, and the first Ryder Cup to be played on the mainland. With tight, firm fairways and intimidatingly slick greens, it’s not for the faint of heart. But each hole presents its own combination of challenge and beauty. It reaches a climax at 17 with a do-or-die approach shot over a pond to a shallow green guarded by deep, challenging bunkers. It’s a course steeped in history, from Seve Ballesteros to Tiger Woods, and one that will continue to deliver drama round after round.
