Fuengirola dates back to Phoenician, Roman and Arabic towns and can be found on the coastline of the Costa del Sol in Southern Spain.
Fuengirola is a major tourist resort with eight kilometres of beaches and is also home to a medieval fortress. Fuengirola is also known for its zoo, its large expat population and attractive marina.
Fuengirola is located to the north of Marbella and to the south of Benalmadena. Fuengirola is a compact built up tourist resort and gold enthusiast will find the nearest golf courses to the south of the resort of which the El Chaparal Golf Club and the Miraflores Gold Club are the closest. Benalmadena Golf to the north of the resort is also a good option for a game of golf.
Fuengirola is also known for its bars, pubs, restaurants and discos, yacht harbour beaches and promenades. Fuengirola beaches include the Playa Ejido-Castillo, Playa Sta Amalia, Playa San Fransisco, Playa Los Boliches, Playa Las Gaviotas, Playa Torreblanca and the Playa Carvajal.

Getting To Fuengirola – Airport Transfers
Fuengirola has two airports in its vicinity where you can book flights to of which Malaga International Airport, twenty-five kilometres away is the closest. Gibraltar Airport which is seventy-eight kilometres away provides a further gateway for holidaymakers wishing to spend time in Fuengirola.
From Malaga International Airport there are quite a few ways in which you can make your way to Fuengirola as the area has a very good transport infrastructure. There are buses, trains, direct transfers, taxis and car hire to choose from whereas from Gibraltar Airport transport options are a little more limited and come in the form of taxi, car hire and direct transfer.
If you want to cross the border to Linea de la Concepcion you can catch a bus from the bus station to Fuengirola. There are four daily services and the journey time is roughly two hours at a cost of €10.38 for a single. For more information and a timetable you can look at https://www.avanzabus.com/.
Buses from Malaga Airport to Fuengirola are relatively inexpensive. Prices start from as little as €4.50 for a single.
Fuengirola is the last resort connected by rail from Malaga and Malaga International Airport. Trains run from 05:33 until22:33 with a journey time of forty-three minutes.
Train ticket prices have increased and at this moment in time a single costs €3.35 and a return €6.70. For more information you can look at this Renfe page.
Taxi fares from Gibraltar Airport to Fuengirola costs approximately €118 owing to the distance while from Malaga Airport you can expect to pay €30-€35 depending on the time of day.
Direct transfers from Gibraltar Airport are fairly expensive as there are very few providers and the one I managed to find was from Holiday Taxis at a wopping £334 or a family of four during the month of July.
Because Fuengirola is a popular tourist destination there are two options when it comes to booking a direct transfer. A cheaper shared shuttle bus service will cost £33 return for a family of four while a private transfer with a driver will cost £61 for a family of four.
On the question of car hire from Gibraltar Airport again there are limited providers stationed there. At Gibraltar Airport you can choose from Niza and Avis Cars.
Malaga International Airport is a busy airport and in the terminal building you can choose from Auriga Crown, Autos Lido, Avis, Europcar, Goldcar Rental, Hertz, National Atesa, Record, Sixt and Sol-Mar. Here you can really compare quotes and shop around for the best deal.
Fuengirola Car Hire
Car hire isn’t for everyone but there are a few guidelines when it comes to making a car rental booking.
More experienced drivers will secure cheaper car rentals than someone who is just old enough to drive, which mean that the oldest person in your household should make the booking. Unfortunately if you are under the age of twenty-one you will not be able to make a car rental booking.
Most car hire companies will also let you put a named driver on the rental agreement free of charge so that you can share the driving.
All persons who wish to drive a hire car while on vacation will need to present their passports and drivers license at the car rental desk as well as the credit with which the booking was made and an imprint of the card will be taken. This gives the agency protection in case you fail to return the car or rack up unpaid fines.
What is included in the price of the car rental?
Apart from the actual vehicle you will also have purchased an insurance which will give you the minimal cover in case of an accident. Additional insurance can be purchased to cover smaller items such as tyres, keys, and windows. In the event of needing medical care this isn’t covered by your rental insurance but through your travel insurance.
Petrol can be included in the price of your car rental which is extremely useful if you are on a very late flight as petrol stations in Spain close at ten in the evening to reopen the next day. The key is to return the car in the same condition as it was on the pick up. Should you fail to refill the car as per agreement, this will be booked off your credit card along with a surcharge.
Petrol stations can be found at the entrance to Malaga International Airport and less than a kilometre away from Gibraltar Airport. Some car rental companies will hand you an almost empty car which you can fuel on your way out from the airport and then return it empty on the day of departure.
What happens should you need to cancel your car rental and holiday? You should be given a full refund and most car rental firms have a no cancellation fee policy. This will also give you peace of mind should you later find a cheaper quote elsewhere and need to cancel the booking already made.
What happens if I break down, do I need to pay for any repairs or call out service. All rental cars come with a free twenty-four hour breakdown and recovery service so you will never be stranded anywhere for very long.
What happens if my car is stolen? The car rental firm is insured against vehicle theft so that you can relax and have one less worry while on vacation.
Can I drive as much as I want or do I have to limit myself to a certain daily mileage? All car rental companies include an unlimited mileage although there are restrictions should you think to take your car on a ferry to Tangier Morocco.
What happens if I receive a traffic violation? Speeding and parking fines can be paid at the local town hall or alternatively you can inform the car rental company at the drop off and usually that will mean all is taken care of. Should the car rental firm receive the fine after your vacation you will most likely have the fine as well as an administration charge booked off your credit card.
If you are more than two hours later than the agreed time returning your rental car, you will be charged for an extra day.
It is also best to carefully inspect the car on collection as if there is any damage you may be accountable which would be unfair if the damage was caused by the previous renters.
Families with children should remember to sort out car seats for their children either by bringing their own or rent one from the car rental firm. Car seat rental starts from as little as €2 a day.
Should you wish to make use of a GPS you can rent a high end model where it will be included in the price, or rent one either already in the United Kingdom, rent one from the car rental firm or even bring your own.
Optional extras to consider are items such as ski chains, ski racks, roof racks and boxes should you need extra storage or take a trip into the Sierra Nevada.
How Much Does Hiring a Car Cost?
Looking at examples of car hire during the month of July with car trawler a Peugeot 107 can be rented for £353 for a two week period from Gibraltar Airport and a Toyota Avensis can be rented for £470.
From Malaga International Airport car hire for the same models at the same time is a little cheaper. A Peugeot 107 will cost £233 while a Toyota Avensis will cost €470. From Malaga Airport there is also a greater range of models to choose from.
Car rental is seasonal so during the peak season where supply and demand is at its highest you will pay a premium while during the off peak times it can be quite cheap.
Many people will catch a bus, train or taxi to Fuengirola and then rent a car for a day or two to explore the neighbouring resorts of Marbella, Torremolinos, Benalmadena and Puerto Banus, play golf or visit water parks. Luckily there are quite a few local car rental companies and visitors are always welcome to step in and make a personal enquiry.

On researching car hire to Fuengirola I think that flying into Malaga Airport is the way to go as it is nearer than Gibraltar Airport and every kind of transfer is cheaper as is the car rentals. You would need to book a very cheap flight to Gibraltar to save any money.
