Welcome to this tourist guide to the modern beach resort of Almerimar in the province of Almeria in Spain.
This is very much a modern purpose-built resort with two excellent hotels next door to the golf course so if you want more traditional resorts try Motril and Almuñecar on the Costa Tropical coast, further along towards Malaga.
Almerimar Map – Getting to Almerimar
Almerimar is located 40km west of Almeria city and 160km east of Malaga – you can see the precise location of Almerimar below on the map below.
Almerimar (also known as Ensenada San Miguel) is situated in the municipality of El Ejido in the province of Almeria in Andalucia, Spain.
The nearest airport is Almeria International airport which has many low-cost flights to and from Northern Europe.
For satellite navigation use the co-ordinates of 36 ° 42’3 “N2 ° 47’21 “W
The map is also useful for getting driving directions to and from Almeria airport as well as for excursions around the local area to other resorts such as Roquetas de Mar.
What To See and Do in Almerimar
This is very much a small resort – the population is only just over 6,000 so it is not a large place. You would come here to relax on the beaches and perhaps play some golf.
You are close to the mountains of Sierra de Gádor. You could easily ski or snowboard at Sierra Nevada in the morning and be on the beach for the afternoon – not many places can offer that variety!
The marina has 1,100 berths. You can take boat trips and also go diving, sailing, windsurf and fishing.
With over 13km of wide sandy beaches you can truly have a relaxing beach holiday with everything you need within walking distance.
This is a great area if you like nature and walking and hiking. There are also stables nearby so you can go horse-riding.
Head west to see the Castillo (castle) Guardias Viejas.
Just an hour’s drive away you can visit the famous “Cabo de Gata” reserve with some amazing remote beaches, perfect some nude sunbathing.
Just 30 minutes drive gets you to Almeria city with it’s historic castle, cathedral and shops.
The magnificent city of Granada with its historic district and Alhambra Palace is 90 minutes drive away.
Weather
The situation near the very south of Spain ensures a warm dry climate virtually the whole year round, although note that you are not far from the mountains so expect more rain here than you would further south on the Costa del Sol.
Nevertheless, just 45 minutes drive away is the only desert in Europe – Tabernas, where the “Mini-Hollywood Theme Park” is situated, the setting for many famous Clint Eastwood movies!
We have a dedicated Costa Almeria weather page here.
The peak summer months of July and August sees average daytime temperatures above 30ºC.
Temperatures only start to really drop near the end of September when it is certainly possible to be still swimming in pools and the Mediterranean Sea.
In winter it is mostly dry and warm although cold at nightime.
Golf Almerimar Resort
This is a five star hotel hotel and golf course combined just 20 metres away from the marina.
Opened in 1976 is Golf Almerimar – a 27-hole course designed by Ron Kirby and the world-famous player Gary Player.
The Costa Almeria region may be desert in places but Golf Almerimar is well-watered so is a very green course lined with trees and grass.
You can enjoy a delicious meal in the restaurant and bar.
Other facilities include a driving range, putting green, pro shop and tennis courts.

Excursions
El Ejido
Just 4 miles inland is the town of El Ejido which gives a true taste of Spain unlike Almerimar which is just a purpose-built resort based by the beaches.
El Ejido is a market town surrounded by fields. Agriculture is very important here as well as tourism and you will see the plastic-sheets for miles which protect the crops from the weather and birds. Much of Spain’s fruits and vegetables are grown here and you can buy them at the local weekly market.
There is also a large shopping complex between El Ejido and Almerimar which has a large supermarket, shops and a cinema complex.
Punta Entinas-Sabinar Nature Reserve
This protected reserve to the east of Almerimar is an area of great natural beauty consisting of dunes and wetland. Home to over 150 different species of bird including flamingoes, herons, cormorants and redshanks.
Alpujarras Mountains
The Alpujarras mountain range is only only 30 minutes drive from Almerimar. Here you can really enjoy nature and this area is ideal for walking holidays. This mountain range is connected to the “Sierra Nevada” in the Granada province where you can go skiing.
